Product Description

This piece is a heartfelt homage to the man who introduced Phineas Newborn Jr. to John Hammond, who in turn connected Newborn with Atlantic records and a management team in New York City, thus paving the way for his wide exposure and commercial success in the world of jazz. True to Count Basie’s musical tastes, this piece swings buoyantly and effortlessly, while utilizing big band sounding textures, particularly in the bridge sections of the piece. Elaborate two-handed textures abound in this arrangement, while the two solo choruses range from Blues-based and space-filled melodic gestures and full two-handed textures, to double-time lines played two octaves apart and double-time lines harmonized with block chords. There is a “shout†chorus of “fours†that features the hands moving in contrary motion for four measures, before the bass and drum solos respectively. The tag ending (3 times) is yet another nod to Basie’s way of arranging a song…
