Product Description

Composed by Cole Porter, recorded by Phineas Newborn Jr. on June 18, 1959 and released on Piano Portraits by Phineas Newborn Jr., Roulette Birdland SR 52031. At quarter note = 240 plus, this up-tempo rendition of Porter’s classic minor keyed work is remarkable for it’s two-handed arrangement and economical bop styled solo, including passages that are doubled in the left hand 2 and even 3 octaves below the right hand. The 16 measure introduction is bluesy, with big band style chordal hits. Newborn’s treatment of Porter’s 72 measure song form is exquisite, while his improvised solo is packed with energy and impeccable playing.
