Product Description

“Ray’s Idea” – Composed by bassist Ray Brown and Gil Fuller, recorded by Phineas Newborn Jr. on February 12 or 13, 1969 and released on Harlem Blues, Contemporary Records OJCCD-662-2 (S-7634). This classic bop tune features Newborn playing the whole piano, (at quarter note = 212), from the introduction, through the 32 bar tune, the 8 measure interlude, 3 choruses of piano solo, 1 chorus of trading “fours” with the drums, the 32 bar tune again (played somewhat differently), and concluding with the interlude. The entire first solo chorus consists of the left hand doubling the right hand’s bebop lines, one octave apart for 12 measures and then two octaves apart for the remainder to the chorus. The next two piano solo choruses include single line and right hand octaves, as well as some clever contrary motion between the hands, and more double octave passages with the left hand doubling the right. This piece is for anyone who wants to learn more about the art of bebop piano! (12 pages)
